FAQ

  • To uncover mould in your home, it’s important to stay observant and watch for signs of moisture, as mould often hides out of sight. These signs can include sagging or stained ceilings and walls, uneven or swollen floors, paint bubbles, paint deterioration, efflorescence on bricks, water dripping from soffits or behind wall coverings after rainfall, stained or warped carpets, rust on carpet fixtures, rotting or warping wood surfaces, standing water on roofs or missing roof tiles, blocked gutters or downspouts, deteriorated flashing, clogged condensate drain lines or improperly sloped drain pans, blocked weep holes in walls, erosion along the building perimeter, inadequate ventilation in subfloors, growth of mushrooms, moss, or lichen, visible mould patches, areas where previous leaks or floods were not dried within 48 hours, and persistent humidity levels exceeding 60%. The presence of a musty odour is a tell-tale sign of mould in your home.

  • The well-known health effects of mould include lung issues like asthma, bronchitis, cold and flu-like symptoms, hay fever, and, less commonly, pneumonia and eczema. However, gene screening advancements have revealed that 24% of the population cannot produce antibodies to fungi. This inability means that every time these individuals enter a water-damaged building, they experience an inflammatory response that doesn’t switch off, known as Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS).

For those affected, symptoms may start subtly with fatigue, headaches, and digestive issues and, over time, progress to brain fog (forgetting words, mood swings, poor concentration, and memory loss), joint pain, sleep disturbances, and difficulty regulating body temperature. Additionally, about half of these individuals experience excessive urination, thirst, and increased sensitivity to electric shocks due to changes in antidiuretic hormone levels. Remarkably, many of these symptoms disappear during pregnancy because the neuropeptide involved (melanocyte-stimulating hormone) increases during this period.

If left untreated, many affected individuals become housebound or bedridden, often mislabeled as having psychogenic issues or misdiagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, or depression. Proper diagnosis and treatment, including medications to detoxify the body from mould and mycotoxins, are essential to reclaim their health.

  • If you suspect mould in your home, it’s advised to contact a mould testing technician or indoor environmental professional. They can identify the source, cause, and extent of the mould, assess the level of exposure, and outline a detailed plan for mould removal. This plan should be carried out by an independent remediation team, ensuring thorough and unbiased treatment to eliminate the mould effectively.

You can also consider conducting an ERMI dust test at the home, available for $459 through https://nsjenviro.com.au/. These tests use DNA testing technology to determine the species of mould present in the dust in the home and quantify the amount in which they are present. A score is provided with each test which designates whether the home is considered a low mould/average mould/high mould or very high mould environment. They are a great sampling tool, but are unable to provide information about where the problem exists and/or how easily it can be fixed.

  • A comprehensive mould and moisture assessment involves a detailed examination of both the interior and exterior areas of a property. This evaluation uses specialised tools such as thermal imaging devices, digital moisture mapping equipment, and techniques for water vapour assessment. To accurately determine the property’s condition and the extent of any contamination, various sampling methods are employed. The outcome of this assessment is a thorough report and scope of works, enabling a well-rounded remediation strategy. It’s crucial that the inspection is conducted on-site and independently, separate from any remediation company. A proper assessment typically lasts between four to five hours and stresses the importance of not relying solely on air sampling for evaluation.

    • Step 1: Initial Consultation - Begin with a complimentary call to understand your concerns.

    • Step 2: Service Quote - Receive a detailed quote for services via email.

    • Step 3: Appointment Scheduling - Once the quote is accepted and a 50% inspection fee deposit is paid, the assessment appointment is scheduled.

    • Step 4: Exposure History Questionnaire - You receive an exposure history questionnaire which takes approximately 45 minutes to complete online.

    • Step 5: Zoom Consultation - A 20-minute Zoom consultation is held to discuss your exposure history questionnaire and for Jess to clarify any details.

    • Step 6: On-Site Inspection - An on-site inspection is conducted using specialised equipment to identify problem areas and collect samples. Moisture intrusion problems are identified, and samples are express posted to the laboratory. The inspection fee and sample costs must be paid in full for the samples to be processed.

    • Step 7: Report Delivery - Within two weeks of the laboratory forwarding sampling results, you will receive a comprehensive report. The report includes recommendations based on the assessment findings and lab results. Recommendations may involve contracting specialised services (e.g., roofing, plumbing, waterproofing) and/or a mould remediation team. Note: MouldWise does not offer remediation services and it is considered a conflict of interest to conduct both inspections and remediations.

    • Step 8: Follow-Up Support - After receiving the report, you will also receive one week of personalised follow-up email support.

  • For an average-sized home, an external and internal inspection typically takes around 5 hours, with larger homes requiring slightly more time. Our inspection fee includes an exposure history questionnaire (approximately 45 minutes to complete), a review of this questionnaire, and a Zoom consultation to discuss it prior to your inspection. All inspections come with a comprehensive report, including sample analysis (usually 60+ pages, taking around 5 hours to write), and a week of personalised email support after you receive your report.

This way, you can refer back to them whenever needed.

  • The IICRC S520 underscores the importance of impartiality in mould testing and assessment. Independent inspectors, who are not affiliated with remediation companies, prioritise the client’s interests above all else. This ensures that recommendations for remediation remain unbiased and free from personal influence. Collaborating with an independent inspector eliminates any potential conflicts of interest, thereby ensuring transparency and integrity throughout the assessment process.

  • MouldWise exclusively provides mould inspections, adhering to the recommendation that the inspector remains independent from the remediator to prevent any conflict of interest, as outlined in the IICRC S520 guidelines.

  • Free mould inspections are quite common, especially as remediation companies find it an effective way to promote their services. However, the allure of something free can sometimes be misleading. The reason to be cautious of companies offering free mould inspections lies in their lack of thoroughness. A comprehensive mould inspection requires extensive on-site hours, involving meticulous external and internal assessments using specialised tools and equipment by a qualified professional. Visual inspection alone is insufficient for accurately detecting mould; sampling and laboratory analysis are essential for a thorough assessment, which cannot realistically be provided without cost.

Proceeding with mould remediation without identifying all sources of mould can lead to ongoing environmental contamination or recontamination of cleaned areas. Proper laboratory testing involves expensive equipment and skilled technicians who handle and document samples meticulously, preparing them for analysis using NATA-accredited and industry-standard methodologies. These methods are rigorously followed by labs nationwide to ensure accurate results.

The extensive professional labour and costly equipment required for such testing are not provided for free. Therefore, if someone offers you a free mould assessment, it’s best to be skeptical, as it often indicates an attempt to sell remediation services rather than a commitment to a thorough assessment and accurate results.
